A fine house in the centre of Charolles

Charolles is a market town of charm and antiquity, faithful to the last Duke of Burgundy, whose name is recalled in place and street names, and placed at the confluence of two small rivers whose diverging course inspires comparisons with Venice by enthusiastic locals (though not by Venetians). Among its many handsome old buildings is this fine house, originally built shortly before the French Revolution, extended in the next century and then beaufifully and painstakingly renovated in recent years. A stone wall affords privacy from the small street in the town centre, and the front gate reveals a courtyard transformed into a charming garden with its gravelled paths,stone terraces and an artful mixture of flower beds and shrubs, with a swimming pool placed discreetly to one side, flanked by a pleasant area for alfresco meals.
The oldest part of the ground floor houses the splendid new kitchen, as well as a small entrance hall with staircase, WC, laundry and storage; while in the 19th century part are a series of fine rooms, panelled dining room, the main salon, a living room and office, as well as the main entrance hall with its magnificent spiral staircase complete with chandelier. Upstairs four bedrooms, of which the main one has a huge private bathroom, the other three have a bathroom and WC, while at the top of the back stairs is a fifth bedroom with private bathroom. There is also a garage adjacent to the house, which could be connected directly to the interior of the house (access as yet from the street only).
Shops and services within walking distance include good restaurants, in particular a Michelin-starred one. The situation of the house is quiet and private, for all that it is in the centre of town. And this fine property can accommodate many people, either as a large family home or else perhaps as a "chambre d'hôte" given the independent access to parts of the house. It has preserved its original features, such as the ceiling beams, and plasterwork, while having a high degree of comfort, thanks to its careful renovation.
